We deliver across mainland England, Wales and Scotland. The Scottish Highlands, Scottish and English islands, the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland are quoted separately, as ferry crossings and longer routes apply. All charges are in pounds sterling (£) and include VAT where applicable.
Lead times are estimates from the date cleared funds are received. Units that are imported or built to order may take longer; we confirm a delivery window by phone or email before anything is dispatched.
Caravan handover
Every new and used caravan and motorhome is prepared before handover. Used tourers receive a habitation check covering gas, 12V and 230V electrics, water system, damp readings, ventilation, smoke and CO alarms, and chassis, brakes, tyres and running gear.
Whether you collect or we deliver, handover includes a walk-round demonstration of the hitch, stabiliser, leisure battery, heating, water and gas systems, plus the owner's manuals, service book and any warranty documents. Allow around an hour.
Towing it away yourself
If you are collecting a caravan or trailer on the road, please check before you arrive:
- Licence: since 16 December 2021 anyone with a full car (category B) licence can tow a trailer or caravan up to 3,500 kg MAM — category BE is added to the licence automatically. Towing heavier combinations, such as larger horseboxes on a heavy 4x4 or pick-up, may need further entitlement. Check yours on the DVLA website.
- Weights: the unit's MTPLM (maximum technically permissible laden mass) must not exceed your vehicle's towing limit, and the noseweight must be within both the towbar and the hitch limits. As a sensible guide, keep a caravan's laden weight at or below 85% of the car's kerb weight.
- Braked or unbraked: trailers over 750 kg gross must have working brakes and a breakaway cable. Your vehicle's unbraked towing limit is usually far lower than its braked limit.
- Equipment: a towbar with the right electrics (7-pin or 13-pin), towing mirrors if the unit is wider than your car, and a number plate matching the tow vehicle.
Container & cabin site access
Containers and cabins arrive on a HIAB crane lorry (which lifts the unit into place) or a tilt-bed (which slides it off the back). Before delivery, please make sure:
- The base is firm and level — concrete, compacted hardcore or sleepers/pads under each corner
- An articulated or rigid lorry can reach the site on a hard road surface
- For a tilt-bed, there is straight-line clearance of about 20 m for a 20ft unit and 30 m for a 40ft unit
- For a HIAB, there are no overhead cables or trees within the lifting area
- You have any landowner consent or planning permission your local authority requires
If the driver cannot safely offload because access differs from what was described, a re-delivery or waiting charge may apply. Tell us about narrow lanes, weight limits or soft ground when you order and we'll plan the right vehicle.
Viewings & collection hours
Viewings and collections are by appointment, Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm and Saturday 9am–1pm. Please bring photo ID and your order number. Call 01632 960 123 to book.
Orders confirmed before 1pm on a working day normally enter the same-day preparation queue. Orders placed later, at weekends or on UK bank holidays are processed the next working day.
Inspection, risk & damage
Ownership passes once payment has been received in full; risk passes to you on delivery or collection. Please inspect the unit on arrival and note any transit damage on the delivery note before signing. Photographs and an email to orders@hitchway.co.uk within 48 hours help us resolve any claim quickly. This does not affect your statutory rights.
Your rights to cancel or return are explained in our Returns & Refunds Policy.
